What Every Print Is Made From

Last updated

The map

Every shoreline is drawn from OpenStreetMap data, © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License. Each print is a produced work and carries this credit in its margin. Searches go through Nominatim, run by the OpenStreetMap Foundation; shorelines come from the Overpass API at overpass-api.de, with VK Maps' public instance as the fallback.

The depths

Depth contours and published depths come from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (lake bathymetric contours and LakeFinder), the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (Inland Lake Contours, Lake Deep Points and reference hydrography) and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (lake bathymetry contours). Each print names the agency and the day its survey was read. None of them has reviewed or endorsed these prints.

The published figures

For lakes in other states, each published depth and acreage is read on a named page of the agency or the dam operator, quoted in its own words and dated. Every page and every reading is kept in sources.json.

The ground

The hills round the water in the shaded styles come from the AWS Terrain Tiles on the Registry of Open Data on AWS, as their attribution document asks to be credited:

The faces

Bodoni Moda, drawn by Owen Earl; Archivo, from Omnibus-Type; and DM Mono, from Colophon Foundry. Each is under the SIL Open Font License and served from our own pages through Fontsource.

The measuring

Areas on the ellipsoid use the authalic latitude from John P. Snyder's Map Projections: A Working Manual, checked in our tests against Charles Karney's figure for the whole WGS84 surface.
